After getting involved with Belfast4Haiti Marty and I wanted to do something extra to raise awareness in our own social and business circles to hopefully get people talking about the Haiti and Chile disaster. We settled on heading in a direction that would take us out of our comfort zones and encourage others to do their bit. We are planning to complete a 48hr time-lapse piece involving a human subject and we are hoping to raise £500 in the 48hrs of filming it.

Time-Lapses are a beautiful and modern interpretation of our world in motion. It has become common place in cinematography and some pioneers have travelled the world capturing our cityscapes with extreme dedication. We decided to do our own time-lapse piece in Belfast city, with a difference.

This poses a number of issues from a technical perspective not to mention the obvious sleep deprivation involved in being the human subject (sat stationary for the duration of the time) and the photographer/cameraman. Marty decided to put himself forward for the challenge and we set about organising it. We are still awaiting confirmation for the location but the image above will give you an idea of the proposed backdrop.

We will be dedicating this piece to help raise funds for both countries and all money will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee justgiving.com/belfast4haiti

Below is a trailer for the piece. Enjoy!

In the chilling conditions over here I took a trip down to Lough Neagh and was surprised to see the shores frozen solid. I was interested in knowing just how solid the ice was and like any curious cat I thought about venturing out a few steps but instead, Bonner a local black labrador did the honours and for a moment I too was frozen to the spot watching him come over to greet us! He crossed the gut without incident much to my relief and his owner Jack just laughed at me. Jack is twelve and without fear . . . I remember when I was invincible too. This is a 13 sec exposure late in the evening.

I decided to take a drive into the city last night to find a little inspiration and I came across the Queen’s Bridge in Belfast. It was a grey and dull night but I wanted to capture belfast in its own little doom and gloom because that’s how most of us remember it. We don’t get blistering summers or even warm ones most of the time so this was a shot of belfast in a bad mood. I chose the bridge because of it’s bright lights and vintage feel.

Years ago I went out on this boat fishing with my wife’s brother and I remember thinking how strong and sturdy the boat felt as I stepped onto it. To this day it’s as solid as rock but is in need of a good sanding and repaint. For the two shots below I shot the first on a long exposure directly into the moon and I used my flash to light the foreground in order to Illuminate the boat and surrounding grass. I used the same approach for the second shot but this time shot away from the moonlight and used it to light my subjects. Granted its not as bright as the first shot but I like how the light is subtle and gives the feeling of twilight.

These were both shot in and around 10:30pm (Sunset being 8:13pm presently).
